Salman ‘Superman’ Khan has done it again. This Eid, again audiences put their brains in a bin, money in Bhai’s till and sat back to be swept by the Salman style ‘toofan’. Who cares if his movies defy logic? His fans live to relive his comic moments, quirky one-liners, slick stunts (animated ones in Kick) and song-dance numbers.
100% pure entertainment! After all, as one ardent fan said, if you want logic you should watch a documentary. Kick probably goes one step ahead than the regular Salman flicks, for having a superb supporting cast, especially the suave villain Siddiqui. But honestly, the Khan has more than enough muscle to pull in in the ‘moolah’ all by himself- all 100 crore plus of it. And with Kick, he would have done it 7 times in the space of just 4 years! Here’s a quick recap of the other six:
1) Ek Tha Tiger (199 crores): Imagine Bhai’s brawn, body and brute strength combined with a refreshingly strong heroine in Katrina, scintillating song and dance sequences liberally peppered with action and style, all actually rolled up in a gist of a story. The combination is unbeatable. With Sallu as Tiger, the gong nearly sounded at 200 crore.
2) Dabangg 2 (155 crores): For the critics, Dabangg2 may have been just a pale imitation of the original. But fans treated it as the homecoming of a much beloved whacky member of the family. Chulbul Pandey, the bad but comic cop was missed sorely and his second coming dazzled the coffers way past the 100 C.
3) Bodyguard (150 crores): Apparently the packaging of macho muscle with feminine names in a remake of a regional (Malayalam) movie is a winning combination in Bollywood. It sure works in Bodyguard where a subdued, less splendorous Salman sends coffers ringing as the down to earth conscientious and loyal protector of a mischevious and utterly lovable Kareena.
4) Dabangg (140 crores): The 2010 crazy, comic, pure entertainment flick that brought us the iconic Chulbul Pandey, show-cased Sallu as the corrupt but Robin Hood like charismatic cop in love with an enchanting Sonakshi Sinha. Chulbul danced all the way, burning a new path to the box office with audience joining in the fun party.
5) Ready (120 crores): A Bollywood remake of the romantic hit Telugu movie of the same name, this noisy bizarre movie pits Salman (yet again sporting his Prem avatar) against twenty or more irritating villains in an attempt to win his lady love played by Asin. Chartbusting songs and Bhai’s screen presence did it for this one.
6) Jai Ho (110 crores): This movie is a testament to his fans’ love for Salman. As an angry young do-gooder, Superman Khan pulled this limp offering through though not with his usual fun and style.
